Docs: Argument in woods on NW side led to teen shooting, killing man

INDIANAPOLIS — The teen who allegedly shot and killed 38-year-old William Deaton on the northwest side of Indianapolis last month has been identified.

According to court documents filed in Marion County, 17-year-old Emmanuel Awobiyi has officially been charged with murder after a fatal shooting on Sept. 30 in the 5200 block of Austral Drive.

According to previous reports, Awobiyi was taken into custody on Monday after he was identified as the suspect in the fatal shooting. Initially, IMPD did not identify the suspect by name.

In an interview with a witness, identified in the court documents as a woman, she reportedly told law enforcement that she met up with Awobiyi in some woods near his home. The interaction eventually led to an argument between the two.

The argument led to the woman screaming, the documents said, which allegedly led Awobiyi to grab her around the mouth and the nose. The documents said that Awobiyi eventually threw her to the ground and pointed a handgun at her.

The documents said that Deaton, identified as a man who reportedly drove the woman to the scene, “presumably heard the screams… and went to help her.” Officials allege that as Deaton approached the wooded area, shots were fired and Deaton was struck by gunfire.

In video footage obtained by law enforcement, footage reportedly shows Awobiyi walking down Austral Drive before going into the woods behind some houses. The documents also state that the video shows Deaton getting out of his vehicle and starting to run towards the back of the houses.

“Seconds after (Deaton) leaves the camera view, (the viewer hears) multiple gunshots ring out,” the documents said. “Again, just seconds later, (the viewer sees) the suspect running from behind the houses and heading south on Austral Drive.”

Law enforcement officials identified Awobiyi through the video footage and the witness reportedly identified Awobiyi as the alleged shooter. Awobiyi was taken into custody on Monday after he was found walking in the neighborhood.

During a search of Awobiyi’s home, law enforcement officials reportedly found a gun wrapped in a plastic bag inside the tank of a toilet. However, during an interview with Awobiyi, he reportedly told law enforcement that he had a gun inside the home.

According to court documents, a remote attorney conference in this case is scheduled for Nov. 20.
