Decorated East Bay Police K9 injured during training; cop covers vet bill to save dog’s life

(KRON) — A Hayward Police Department K9 was seriously injured during a “routine” training session on Oct. 20 and faced euthanasia before the dog’s handler agreed to pay for his veterinary bill, the department announced Thursday.

Vets determined that K9 “Arwin” suffered extensive ligament and tendon damage, which would require multiple surgeries. With Arwin weeks from retirement, the department chose not to pay for the surgeries.

“The K9 unit did not have funding in their operational budget for unanticipated significant medical expenses, and euthanizing him was the only other option presented,” Hayward PD said. “Funding does exist in two separate donation accounts, including one that belongs solely to the K9 unit, which would have covered medical expenses. However, the K9 unit members elected not to use that funding. To prevent him from being euthanized, officer Higgins agreed to assume ownership of Arwin to cover his medical expenses.”

Arwin was scheduled to retire in January of 2026, after a distinguished career. The injury forced the department to retire the dog immediately.

“K9 Arwin’s career has been nothing short of extraordinary.,” Hayward PD said. “Over six years of service, he played a vital role in apprehending countless suspects and uncovering critical evidence at numerous crime scenes. His contributions extended beyond the field — Arwin was a dominant force at trials across the West Coast and was most recently honored as ‘Top Dog’ by the Western States Police Canine Association, a title that cements his legacy as one of the top K9s in the state.”

Hayward PD thanked Arwin for his service Thursday and called his career “nothing short of extraordinary.”

“We extend our deepest thanks to K9 Arwin and officer Higgins for their unwavering dedication and service to HPD and the community,” Hayward PD said. “K9 Arwin’s courage, loyalty, and excellence have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to work alongside him.”
