Identity of Deputy and K9 officer injured in Tremonton shooting released

TREMONTON, Utah (ABC4) — The identities of the Deputy and K-9 Officers who were injured in Tremonton late Sunday night have been released.

On August 17, 2025, officers from the Tremonton Garland Police Department (TGPD) and Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office responded to calls of a domestic disturbance in Tremonton. Two officers, Sergeant Lee Sorensen and Officer Eric Estrada, were fatally shot. Additionally, a Deputy and a K9 Officer were injured.

The Tremonton Garland Police Department has since released the identities of the injured deputy and K9 officer. Deputy Mike Allred, with the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office, and K9 Officer Azula were shot and injured on the scene.

Reportedly, Deputy Allred and Azula were third on scene of the domestic disturbance, as they responded to a call for back up. The suspect, later identified as Ryan Bate, allegedly shot several rounds at Allred’s vehicle using a high-powered rifle, hitting and injuring Deputy Allred and Azula. Allred and Azula remained in their vehicle, before being transported to an area hospital and specialty veterinary clinic.

Deputy Allred has worked for Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office for five years and worked two of those years as a K9 handler with Azula. Azula is certified in narcotics detection and tracking.

“Deputy Allred is a natural leader who consistently prioritizes the welfare of others over his own,” said the Tremonton Garland Police Department, “His actions during the incident in Tremonton exemplify his character and commitment to public service. His primary focus is always on the safety of his fellow officers and the communities he serves.”

According to officials, both Deputy Allred and Azula are recovering in fair condition.
