One in 50 students in Utah is experiencing homelessness, and one in three is living in poverty.
Emily Bell McCormick, founder of the Policy Project, shared that students who are experiencing homelessness or living in poverty are struggling to gain an education.
“It’s incredibly difficult to learn if you’re hungry,” McCormick said.
McCormick also shared that kids are less likely to go to school if they have bad hygiene and will not be able to focus on class if they did not get good sleep the night before.
In an attempt to help all students gain a valuable education, the Policy Project created teen centers. The teen centers are attached to various high schools across the state and have showers, washing machines, dryers, food, and hygiene kits.
In the last year and a half, the Policy Project has helped open 86 teen centers across the state of Utah.
Before the PGA tournament, the PGA TOUR Wives teamed up with the Policy Project and prepared 1,000 hygiene kits, which included shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, and more. The kits were delivered to Snow Canyon High School.
The PGA TOUR Wives do a service project in every city they stop in during the PGA tour.
“It means a lot to us. It gives us a bigger sense of purpose as we travel across the country throughout the year,” said Megan Hubbard with the PGA TOUR Wives.
McCormick shared that she hopes to see the Policy Project reach nearly every school in Utah, and the help from the PGA TOUR wives helped the program get one step closer.
