Valley Rescue Mission calls for community to donate as government shutdown threatens SNAP benefits

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — As the government shutdown continues to take a toll on the community, local organizations are preparing for the impact on families who rely on food assistance.

The Valley Rescue Mission in Columbus is asking for the community’s help as their food supply runs low.

The shelter, which served more than 180,000 meals last year, fears an increase in demand if SNAP benefits are delayed in November.

Mike Gaymon, CEO of Valley Rescue Mission, said the nonprofit depends heavily on community donations to keep its programs running. “It really depends upon donations,” Gaymon said. “We at the Valley Rescue Mission certainly appreciate every single donation. There’s no such thing as just a little donation — they all mount up.”

To prepare for growing food insecurity, the mission launched the Community Hunger Relief Fund several weeks ago with a goal to raise $500,000 by the end of the year.

Gaymon said bulk food purchases help stretch every dollar further.

“You can give me a dollar can of corn or you can give me a one-dollar bill, and I can buy 10 cans of corn,” Gaymon explained.

In September, the shelter saw a 43% increase in meals served through its “Loaves and Fishes” program — providing more than 2,700 meals to people experiencing homelessness.

Valley Rescue Mission continues to urge the public to join the fight against food insecurity.
