MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The Merced County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in identifying a man and a young woman who were caught stealing pumpkins from the St. Paul Lutheran Church and School.

St. Paul School and Preschool Principal Ruth Sebastian says the bandits made off with about 20 pumpkins. This happened back on Oct. 11, around 7 a.m. While no one was at school at the time, the crime was all caught on camera.

Ring footage shows a silver SUV pulling up to St. Paul Lutheran Schools’ front office, located behind the church. First, a young girl gets out and picks up a large pumpkin. While she goes to take it to the car, an older man in white proceeds to do the same. Both of them return again and again, picking pumpkin after pumpkin.

But these aren’t just normal pumpkins from the store. Fourth and fifth-grade students began growing them in the school garden over the summer. “It was really heartbreaking because the kids had put so much effort into growing their own and seeing it go from a seed all the way to the beautiful large pumpkins that they are, and having somebody come in quickly and just take those away,” she added.

The pumpkins were meant for class projects and for this weekend’s Trunk or Treat event, where each child was supposed to take home their own pumpkin.

When Grocery Outlet heard the news, the supermarket donated and replaced all the pumpkins that had been stolen. “Which is extremely generous to help support our school community. And we also had UC Merced be able to bring out some pumpkins, too,” Sebastian exclaimed.

As the video of the theft gains traction on social media, Merced County Sheriff Vern Warnke is asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspects. “Take a look at that video. Give us a call. I want to introduce them to our bed and breakfast right here and let them see, have some pumpkin pie on us,” he said.

Right now, Sheriff Warnke says the suspects are facing misdemeanor charges. If you have any information, you are asked to contact the Merced County Sheriff’s Office at 209-385-7547 or at Sherifftips@countyofmerced.com.
