Green River Tunnel set to reopen months after fatal crash and fire

GREEN RIVER, Wyoming (ABC4) — Months after the fatal crash that killed three and injured dozens, the westbound Green River Tunnel is set to reopen.

The

Wyoming Highway patrol (WHP) announced today that the Green River Tunnel westbound route on I-80 is estimated to re-open at the end of November.

According to officials, no oversized loads are allowed through the tunnel under any circumstances, and they must take alternate routes.

WHP also stated that officials, “would like to sincerely thank all the hard-working truck drivers who have been following these restrictions and continuing their work to keep Wyoming and America moving and operating.”

The Green River Tunnel has been closed to westbound traffic since February 14, 2025, when a multi-vehicle crash led to a fire and multiple casualties.

Crash Details

On February 14, 2025, a pickup truck lost control and spun while exiting the tunnel, before hitting a guardrail and blocking the right lane near the exit of the tunnel. then, a tractor-trailer hit the left side of the tunnel while trying to avoid the pickup truck and came to a stop on the shoulder.

This quickly led to a chain reaction, and Wyoming Highway Patrol initially estimated that 26 vehicles were involved in the accident. One semi-trailer jackknifed inside the tunnel while braking and blocked the tunnel and a Dodge pickup truck with four occupants crashed into that trailer.

A second semi-truck crashed into the tunnel wall and then “collided with and overrode” the Dodge pickup truck. Due to the heat and friction, some vehicle tires exploded inside the tunnel and started a fire.

Christopher Johnson and Quentin Romero, from Rawlins, Wyoming, were fatally injured during the crash. Additionally, Harmanjeet Singh, from Nova Scotia was also fatally injured. All three died on scene as a result of their injuries.

In addition to the three fatalities, 18 others were treated for injuries at a local hospital, and eight vehicles were “destroyed by the fire”, according to the Wyoming Highway Patrol. The tunnel has been closed in the months since.
