Investigation continues after fatal Wyoming tunnel crash

GREEN RIVER, Wyoming (ABC4) — The investigation into a major, multi-vehicle crash in the tunnels on I-80 in Green River, Wyoming, that occurred on Friday is ongoing, according to the Wyoming Dept. of Transportation.

“It’s all hands on deck at the Green River Tunnels on Interstate 80 in southwestern Wyoming, with personnel from the Wyoming Highway Patrol, Wyoming Department of Transportation, and other state and local partners actively working the scene,” a press release from WYDOT states. “Active fire within the tunnel delayed initial investigation efforts, but the WHP Crash Investigation Team has arrived on scene and will provide details as available.”

While two are confirmed dead, officials have not given an update on the number of fatalities or injuries involved in this incident. First responders attacked the situation through the night, as there were several vehicles in the westbound tunnel and an active fire preventing personnel from accessing the tunnel upon first arrival.

The firefighting effort took place well into the evening, officials said. There are still structural concerns and air quality concerns as responders look to mitigate the damage.

“First responders bravely worked through the night to fight the fire in the tunnel, and we could not be more appreciative of their teamwork and support,” said WHP Lt. Col. Karl Germain.

At this time, the investigation shows that there were multiple passenger and commercial vehicles involved in the crash in the middle and western area of the westbound tunnel. Local authorities are actively working to clear damaged and abandoned vehicles from the scene.

Traffic is reportedly being routed around the crash, with westbound traffic being diverted at mile marker 91 and eastbound traffic at mile marker 89, through Green River. Traffic is expected to have an impact on the surrounding community.

“The fiery crash in the westbound tunnel caused electrical equipment and lighting to fall from the ceiling, and the soot from the fire is thick and will need to be cleaned,” the release states. “WYDOT engineers are waiting for the crash scene to be cleared to conduct full assessments of the westbound tunnel.”

There is no sign of collapse in the tunnel at this time, officials said. WYDOT engineers are reportedly also confident in the structural integrity of the eastbound tunnel.

No further information is currently available.
