To determine where people can feel the most secure, WalletHub compared more than 180 cities across 41 key indicators of safety, including the number of mass shootings, thefts per capita and the number of law enforcement employees.
“When people think about safety in a city, their minds probably immediately go to things like the crime rate, auto fatality rate, or risk of natural disasters,” Chip Lupo, WalletHub analyst, said in a statement. “The safest cities in America protect residents from these threats of bodily harm and property damage, but on top of that, they also help secure people’s financial safety. Financial safety includes things like minimizing the risk of fraud and identity theft, keeping the population employed and insured, and combating homelessness.”
What set Warwick apart from the other 181 cities was a relatively low risk of natural disasters such as hail (7th), wildfires (10th), tornadoes (23rd) and earthquakes (29th); low crime rates – 3rd-lowest for aggravated assaults and 7th-lowest for thefts; low amount of residents living in poverty (4th lowest); and a low percentage of people without health insurance (4th lowest).
Memphis has the dubious distinction of leading all others in homicides, recording 40.6 per 100,000 residents, according to the mosts recent FBI data.
