According to officials, around 5:30 p.m. Sunday, a woman was driving northbound on La. 49 when someone signaled that flames were coming from underneath the vehicle’s driver’s side.
The woman then pulled over and her and the child that was in the vehicle managed to escape before getting to a safe distance to call for help.
The Opelousas Fire Department responded to the fire and discovered the fuel tank of the vehicle had ruptured. Firefighters applied foam to prevent the fire from spreading further. No injuries were reported in the incident.
“She said no lights were on and her car was driving fine,” said a captain from the Opelousas Fire Department. “What we suspect happened is maybe a fuel line ruptured and from the heat from her engine, it caught her car on fire.”
