What Louisiana university was named ‘Best Value College’?

THIBODAUX, La. (WGNO) — The number one Best Value College in Louisiana has been named.

In a poll conducted by Niche, Nicholls State University located in Thibodaux, has earned the 2026 title.

The ranking system for deciding the best value college is based on net price, alumni earnings, graduation rates and student debt from data with the U.S. Department of Education.

Additionally, reviews from students and alumni help in the decision making process.

When asked about Nicholls’ campus environment and size students said the university has “a manageable campus size that allows for easy access to classes and resources. The campus grounds are well-kept and provide quiet places to study or relax.”

“Campus safety is a prominent positive aspect mentioned by many students. Nicholls has a visible and responsive campus police presence, numerous emergency call stations, and safety escort services at night. These measures contribute to a campus environment where students generally feel secure walking around at all hours,” according to a peer review.

This ranks the University at number three for “Safest College in Louisiana.”

According to Niche, the average cost and tuition to attend are lower than the national and state averages. The reported net price to attend is $11,029 compared to the $17,821 national and $17,033 state averages.

Niche’s student polls on Nicholls revealed:

• 97% of students feel confident they will find a job in their field after graduation
• 84% of students agree that their professors put a lot of effort into teaching their classes
• 79% of students agree it is easy to get into the classes they want
• 72% of students highly rate the athletics/recreation facilities
• 72% of students highly rate the dining facilities
• 61% of students highly rate the performing arts facilities

Besides Nicholls, other Louisiana colleges in the top five spots include:

• Louisiana Tech University
• University of Louisiana at Lafayette
• Louisiana Christian University
• University of Louisiana – Monroe
