Officer put on leave as Oakland police investigate in-custody death
OPD said the incident happened just after 4:15 a.m. Saturday in the 11000 block of Ettrick Street.
“Upon arrival, officers located the individual inside the residence,” said Oakland police in a social media post. “While attempting to detain the individual, a brief struggle ensued. After being taken into custody, the individual became unresponsive.”
Police said medics arrived and took the suspect to a nearby hospital, where they later died.
“In accordance with OPD policy, the officer(s) involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave,” police confirmed.
OPD said the case is being probed by the Oakland police Homicide unit, its Internal Affairs Bureau, the Oakland City Police Commission, the Community Police Review Agency, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
Oakland police said they will release more information as the investigation allows.
