Thousands fill Indiana Statehouse lawn for No Kings protest

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Statehouse lawn was full of thousands of people on Saturday afternoon. They were participating in one of many No Kings protests that were held across the U.S. on Saturday.

According to a press release from MADVoters.org, the protest kicked off with an activist fair at 11 a.m., followed by a rally at 12 p.m. and wrapped up with a march to the Indiana Statehouse at 2 p.m.

The march originated from three different locations, all of which converged at the statehouse while demonstrators chanted and waved signs in protest against President Donald Trump and his administration.

Anthony Povinelli, a protester, said they were out there to protest the assumption of authority that the president does not have through executive orders.

“We are demonstrating to each other that we are here in solidarity,” Povinelli said. “We are united against executive overreach.”

Many Republican leaders have referred to No Kings protests as “Hate America rallies,” but the protesters disagree.

Another protester, Bill Waltz, said that he was at the Indiana Statehouse to prove that there are a lot of people who don’t hate America.

“We love America,” Waltz said. “We want to have it known we represent people who just simply have a different opinion and are not happy with what is happening currently.”

“This event is a direct response to the ongoing complicity of Indiana’s state government officials with the authoritarian agenda of the Trump regime,” the MADVoters release said.

Throughout the country, 2,700 protests took place across all 50 states, according to a press release by NoKings.org.

“In one of the largest single-day nationwide demonstrations in U.S. history, nearly seven million Americans gathered today, 2 million more than June, in over 2,700 cities and towns for the No Kings Day of Peaceful Action, standing together in nonviolent defiance of authoritarianism and affirming that this nation belongs to its people, not to kings.” the release said.

This is not the first time protesters have flooded the Indiana Statehouse lawn to protest President Trump and the current administration. A No Kings protest also took place at the Indiana Statehouse in June.

Indiana Democratic Party Chair Karen Tallian issued the following statement in response to the protest:

It was amazing to see the thousands of Hoosiers who turned out across the state today. After over 20 years of one-party Republican control and corruption, Hoosiers are fed up and ready for change. In these trying times, it’s so refreshing to see Hoosiers taking to the streets and demanding that our state and federal government focus on the issues that really matter: lowering costs, healthcare, and childcare, not just partisan power grabs.

Hoosiers did not vote for troops in American streets, unprecedented mid-decade gerrymandering, or tariff taxes and bailouts to Argentina. Today, thousands stood up for farms, families, and our future. Hoosiers are seizing the momentum and are ready to vote for change in 2026 by electing more Democrats from courthouses to the Statehouse.
