Freeport police use surveillance video, K-9 to quickly arrest suspect in Friday shooting

FREEPORT, Ill. (WTVO) — An investigation into a Freeport shooting has led to the arrest of a 22-year-old Elgin man as the suspect in the crime.

According to Freeport Police, on Friday, October 17th, officers responded to a gunshot detection system alert in the area of Walnut Avenue and Stephenson Street around 5:36 p.m.

The 33-year-old male victim had been inside a car at the time of the shooting, and suffered a gunshot wound to his arm.

Surveillance video and eyewitness accounts led police to identify Josiah Franklin as the suspect. A K-9 officer led police to an apartment in the 100 block of S. Cherry Avenue, where Franklin was taken into custody.

Police said a semi-automatic pistol, believed to have been used in the crime, was found inside the apartment.

The victim was treated at FHN Hospital and later released.

Franklin now faces charges of aggravated battery with the use of a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm, and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.
