Neighbors are in shock and told YourCentralValley.com that they’re not used to hearing about this sort of violence.
“Stuff has happened here, and we’ve all come together, but nothing like this. It is tragic beyond words,” Fowler resident Talene Kasparian-Cleveland said.
Around 6:30 pm on Oct. 15, Fowler Police responded to the dire situation in a quiet neighborhood.
“A family member who said they were on the line with a man. He was threatening to shoot his elderly mother, his dogs, as well as himself,” Fresno County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Tony Botti said.
But when officers arrived, it was too late.
“We utilized a drone to fly both around the property and actually even inside the house to try and see if there was any movement with anybody. We did not discover any movement,” Botti said.
Everyone inside was dead. The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office has identified the mother as 78-year-old Cheryl Hanoian and the shooter as her son, 60-year-old James McFarland. The sheriff’s office also confirmed he shot and killed his three dogs.
“Based on the evidence and the information we had at that point, we were investigating this as a murder suicide. We’re trying to just learn more about James and Cheryl. There’s nothing glaring to us right now as to what may have led to something like this,” Botti said.
The news has left the Fowler community rattled.
“I was home last night and my phone started ringing. I was getting text messages. What’s going on,” Kasparian-Cleveland said.
She also added that she didn’t know the victims personally, but Fowler is a small and quiet town.
“I live on the complete opposite end of town. And my windows were open, and I started hearing the helicopters, and I heard sirens. And, you know, obviously I panic when I hear that because it again, it could be anybody,” Kasparian-Cleveland said.
The Sheriff’s Office also said Fowler doesn’t often deal with tragedy.
“The last time they had anything significant was in 2020, it was June 13th. It just so happens that it was a murder suicide as well,” Botti said.
