St Landry Parish Clerk of Court Charles Jagneaux will be hosting the Lemelle Heritage Celebration in Honor of Pope Leo XIV and his family connections to St. Landry Parish.
Robert Francis Prevost was elected to the papacy on May 8, becoming the first American pope in history. He is also Creole with a heritage spanning from St. Landry Parish to New Orleans.
In recognition of his lineage and the historical impact they have had on the Parish of St Landry, the clerk’s office is hosting a program featuring guest speakers St. Landry Parish Archivist Larry J. Caillier II focusing on the family and their land ownership along Bayou Courtableau.
Local historian and genealogist Marie Marcel will expand on the record of St. Landry Parish’s genealogical connections and family tree. Special guest Morgan Lemelle and the Zydeco Playmakers will be the featured performers.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. at the newly opened Charles Jagneaux Elections and Archive Center, at 306 W. Landry Street in Opelousas.
