Indiana DNR Urges Public to Help Stop Poaching, Offers Rewards for Tips

Written from press release

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is asking Hoosiers to help fight wildlife poaching by reporting illegal hunting and fishing activity through the Turn In a Poacher (TIP) program.

The DNR’s Division of Law Enforcement said Tuesday that poaching continues to threaten Indiana’s fish and wildlife populations and urged residents to report any suspected violations.

TIP, a nonprofit conservation organization, partners with the DNR to support enforcement efforts and raise public awareness. Reports can be made by calling 1-800-TIP-IDNR (800-847-4367) or online at tip.IN.gov.

“A poacher is a thief who illegally steals wildlife that belongs to all Hoosiers,” the DNR said in its statement. “Every person can help conserve wildlife for future generations by reporting potential violations.”

According to DNR officials, informants may receive up to $500 for tips that lead to an arrest. In 2024, the TIP program received 1,025 reports and paid thousands of dollars in rewards to individuals whose information helped conservation officers make arrests.

“Our citizens are key in the fight to help stop poaching in Indiana,” said Col. Steve Hunter, director of DNR Law Enforcement. “They are a main reason why the Indiana TIP program has been successful in bringing those who violate fish and wildlife laws to justice.”

Reports can cover any potential wildlife violation, including illegal hunting, fishing, or the possession and sale of protected species. Callers can remain anonymous if they choose.

More information about Indiana’s conservation laws and ongoing enforcement efforts can be found at dnr.IN.gov.
