Austin Halloween events round-up: Where to celebrate this spooky season

AUSTIN (KXAN) — This isn’t a trick! KXAN has a special treat for you this Halloween: a compilation of events and festivities happening around the city to make your holiday spook-tacular.

For horror film junkies: Panic at the Paramount

The Paramount Theatre will show six classic horror and thriller films through the end of the month and into November.

The theater, which calls itself “one of Austin’s oldest haunts,” will bring in special guests for Q&As and host live music performances as part of the film series.

One of the screenings, “The Evil Dead,” will be accompanied by a live orchestra that will perform composer Joe LoDuca’s iconic score as the film plays.

For foodies: A Trudy’s Tribute at Holiday

For a trip down memory lane this holiday, check out Holiday on Seventh Street. The cocktail bar and restaurant is “dressing up” as and paying tribute to Trudy’s over Halloween weekend.

The Tex-Mex joint that served Austinites since 1977 closed its doors in January, but Holiday announced a three-day pop-up on Instagram that will feature a menu of “nods to Trudy’s greatest hits.”

The pop-up will run from Oct. 31 through Nov. 2 and will take walk-ins only.

For kids: Spooktacular at the Bob Bullock Museum, Greater Austin YMCA

The Bob Bullock Museum’s annual Spooktacular returns this year, complete with spooky science activities and an after-hours scavenger hunt through the museum.

Participants are encouraged to come in costume to the event, which will run from 5-8 p.m. on Oct 24.

Also available to visitors will be a Día de los Muertos activity and access to the museum’s newest special exhibition, “T-rex: The Ultimate Predator.”

Several YMCA locations across the greater Austin area are hosting free, family-friendly Halloween events.

On Oct. 22, kids can trick-or-treat inside the Y and enjoy games, crafts and live performances during either the morning (9-11 a.m.) or evening (4-6 p.m.) time slots.

The Greater Austin Y Spooktacular will take place on Oct. 24 and 25, featuring a petting zoo, bounce houses, carnival games, a spooky maze and trick-or-treating.

For adults: Ventana Ballet

A modern retelling of the classic ballet “Dracula” is coming to the East Side Performing Arts (ESPA) Center this month.

From Oct. 23 through Halloween, Ventana Ballet will perform an adults-only Halloween show entitled “UNDEAD: Haunted House of Dances.”

The show will feature a variety of local professionals across multiple theater and dance disciplines. Ventana promises patrons will “encounter the shadows of the night, where only the undead gather.”

For the whole family: Pumpkin Nights at Pioneer Farms

Through Nov. 2, Pioneer Farms is hosting Pumpkin Nights, a celebration of creativity centered around the season’s most iconic symbol: the pumpkin.

Visitors walk down a half-mile path through ten “pumpkin lands,” each featuring custom, larger-than-life installations. In total, over 7,500 hand-carved pumpkins line the trail.

The celebrations continue in the Pumpkin Village, the “heart of the festival,” with food, a live fire show, and games. All tickets for the event must be purchased online in advance. Kids three years old and under go free.
