Hate crime suspect sets pride flag on fire at San Leandro home
The San Leandro Police Department told KRON4 that the flag burning is being investigated as a hate crime.
The married couple said they were at home when a man walked down the long driveway and set fire to the pride flag. Surveillance video shared with KRON4 shows the person then walking away, stopping briefly to watch as the fire continued to burn.
Only after the flag was found vandalized did the residents review the security video and see the crime unfold.
“We were very lucky that we’d had some recent rain and that the fire did not spread to the house,” the couple told KRON4. “I’m saddened that this is an issue even here in the bubble of Bay Area.”
No arrest has been made as of Thursday morning, and San Leandro authorities said they are only aware of the single incident.
