According to the Ohio Department of Transportation District 10, the sinkhole has closed a portion of Main Street, or Route 833, near Court Street in the Village of Pomeroy. It was first reported Tuesday evening between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Pomeroy Police Chief Chris Pitchford says westbound traffic is being diverted to Sycamore Street and on to Second Avenue around the sinkhole. Eastbound traffic is being diverted through the Pomeroy Levy parking lot. Pitchford says tractor-trailers and other large vehicles are being diverted through Middleport.
Pitchford says the flow of traffic in that area was “already evolving” because of ongoing construction for the Village’s riverfront revitalization project.
Crews were on scene Wednesday morning to pull up the roadway and evaluate the sinkhole. Pitchford says once the evaluation is complete, officials will have a better idea of how long it will take to repair the sinkhole.
