This is the most burglarized city in Oregon, report says

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — In recent weeks, President Donald Trump has painted a picture of Portland as a crime-ridden city that is “war-ravaged” and “like living in hell,” but at least one city in Oregon has a higher burglary rate.

According to a recently released data analysis from the home security company

SafeWise, Coos Bay is the most burglarized city in Oregon.

The report’s authors used statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation for the year 2023 and calculated the number of reported burglaries per 100 people in the city. During that time, Coos Bay had a population of 15,768, and 224 reported burglaries, for a rate of 1.42 burglaries per 100 residents, according to the report.

The city of Coos Bay is located on the southern Oregon coast. According to local newspaper, The World, about 850,000 tourists visited the general Coos Bay area last year.

The states with the highest burglary rates vary widely. In California, the state with the highest rate, the city of Vernon had 110 burglaries with a population of only 208, for a rate of 52.88, according to the report. In Washington, the state with the greatest burglary rate is Tukwila, which has a population of 21,191 and had 299 reported burglaries. The rate there is 1.41 burglaries per 100 residents.

According to the Portland Police Bureau’s data dashboard, there were 5,030 burglaries reported in the city in 2023–the same year the SafeWise report analyzed. As KOIN 6 News has previously reported, Portland had 635,749 residents that year, amounting to a burglary rate of 0.79.
