ST. GABRIEL, La. (Louisiana First) – People are donating blood in St. Gabriel in honor of Deputy Brett Stassi, Jr., who remains hospitalized after being shot Monday night while making an arrest.
Phyllis Sicard said she knows the Stassi family and wanted to give her blood to help save Captain Stassi’s life.
“Just keep the Stassi and Riley family in your hearts and prayers and get out and help any way you can,” Sicard said. “Our boss sent out a flier at work, so I knew then that it was right here, right across the tracks, so I could just come over and give blood.”
Our Lady of the Lake Hospital set up their mobile blood donation unit right outside the St. Gabriel Community Center to reach out to the other side of Iberville Parish, for residents to show support for the victims and their first responder family.
“It’s an honor, a pleasure, for us to be able to help in any way that we can. It’s a very unfortunate accident, and those officers do serve our area. Their life is on the line every day; it’s the least we can do to help,” Lester Joseph with the St. Gabriel Community Center said.
“After I found out about it, I was like, ‘Aw man, that’s so sad,’ and I figured out they were donating blood, but I didn’t know that I wanted to donate blood, until I got there,” Baton Rouge resident Lily Wright mentioned.
Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi said his son is taking baby steps to recovery, and he’s asking for prayers for his fallen deputy and the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office.
“We’re at a critical time right now in our country, and we need to focus on getting back together to the basics of life, really,” Sicard mentioned.
All donations from today’s event generated a $30 credit toward Captain Stassi’s medical expenses as well.
