Felony charges filed against suspect shot by police during foot chase on South Side

CHICAGO — Felony charges have been filed against a man who was shot by Chicago police on Thursday after he allegedly led officers on a foot chase while armed with a gun.

According to police, 35-year-old McKale Mitchell, a Chicago Heights resident, has been charged with two felony counts – aggravated assault of a peace officer or firefighter or ER worker, as well as two felony counts of possession of a firearm as a repeat felony offender.

Police say the charges stem from an incident that allegedly began near the intersection of 111th Street and State Street in West Roseland, just before 2 pm. on Thursday afternoon.

Officers had initially attempted to stop Mitchell to conduct an “investigatory stop” in relation to a recent string of robberies.

But as officers approached Mitchell, they say he allegedly fled the scene on foot, leading officers on a chase.

As they pursued the suspect, authorities said they then allegedly spotted him with a gun.

The officers ordered him to drop the gun, but say he ignored their commands. Officers then discharged their weapons, hitting Mitchell in the leg.

Officers rendered aid to the suspect before he was taken to an area hospital, where he was initially reported in serious condition. Two officers were also taken to an area hospital for observation.

Two guns were also covered at the scene, according to police.

On Saturday, authorities announced the charges against Mitchell, but did not provide a booking photo.

Mitchell is set to appear in court for a detention hearing on Saturday.

COPA is currently investigating the officers’ use of force, while the officers involved will be placed on administrative duties for at least 30 days.

Those with information on the shooting can contact COPA on its website or by calling 312-746-3609.
