Arkansas Department of Agriculture selects 10 schools for tree program

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Arkansas Department of Agriculture has selected 10 schools in the state for participation in its annual tree program.

The Shade Tree on Playgrounds program aims to provide students with experience in planting and caring for trees. ADA Urban & Community Forestry Program Coordinator Kristine Kimbro said the program also provides students with an opportunity to see the role trees play in communities.

“We’re excited to see these schools create lasting benefits for both students and their playgrounds,” Kimbro said.

Officials said selected schools will receive up to five native shade trees, mulch, watering supplies, and planting guidelines. Participants must attend a virtual STOP workshop, incorporate curriculum on the importance of trees and forestry in Arkansas, hold a tree-planting ceremony, and commit to long-term maintenance.

ADA will help with transporting and planting the trees, officials said.

The schools selected are:

• Arrie Goforth Elementary School, Norfork
• De Queen Elementary School, De Queen
• Gary E. Cobb Middle School, Texarkana
• International Studies Magnet School, Jonesboro
• Jessieville Middle School, Jessieville
• Kingston School, Kingston
• Marvell-Elaine Elementary School, Marvell
• Mt. Judea School, Mt. Judea
• Perryville Elementary School, Perryville
• Rison Elementary School, Rison

Ten additional schools will receive a small potted tree, along with education resources.

These schools are:

• Arrows Academy, Paragould
• Cabot Pre-K North and Pre-K South, Cabot
• Centerpoint Elementary School, Amity
• Cornerstone Christian Academy, Tillar
• Daisy Bates Elementary, Little Rock
• Frank Tillery Elementary School, Rogers
• Howard Perrin Elementary School, Benton
• Spring Hill Elementary School, Hope
• Villa Crest Academy, Clarksville
• Yellville-Summit Middle School, Yellville
