WIC office set to close in Lyon County due to government shutdown

LYON COUNTY (KSNT) – A local Women, Infants and Children nutrition program office is closing until further notice starting next week.

Justin Ogleby with CareArc announced in a press release on Oct. 9 that, due to the ongoing government shutdown, the WIC office at 420 W. 15th Ave. in Lyon County will be shutting down. The closure will take effect on Monday, Oct. 13.

“To ensure continued support for WIC participants, Lyon County WIC is collaborating with the Johnson County Health Department to assist with New Certifications and Recertifications during this time.”

Staff at the Lyon Count WIC office are working to issue benefits and schedule appointments for a later date. Ogleby encourages all WIC participants to continue to keep their appointments and use their benefits. The government shutdown is not impacting food benefits as of Oct. 9.

We reached out to the KDHE earlier in the month about the agency’s WIC funding. KDHE spokeswoman Jill Bronaugh said the agency received a little more than $1 million for WIC funding which should allow the KDHE to sustain benefits through the month of October.

“We encourage WIC recipients to continue their purchasing as usual,” Bronaugh said. “We will continue to evaluate options and work with local health departments as we receive more information and guidance from our federal partners.”
