Robbinsdale to pay nearly $1.2M to settle police shooting lawsuit

More than five years after police shot a man in crisis in Robbinsdale, the city has approved a deal to settle a lawsuit against the police officer.

Tuesday, the Robbinsdale City Council unanimously approved a nearly $3.2 million settlement for Adam Nelson, who was shot by Crystal Police Sgt. Geoffrey Kusick during the July 12, 2020, incident.

Even though Kusick worked for another city, Robbinsdale is responsible for the claim because it happened after a mutual aid request.

Nelson was armed and in crisis at a home along France Avenue North when officers were called to help him. However, after they arrived, Nelson came outside and started walking toward police while holding a gun. When he didn’t stop, as officers told him, Kusick shot Nelson, who was treated at a hospital and survived.

The settlement resolves the ongoing civil litigation stemming from that incident, although the city notes it assumes no fault.

Robbinsdale will be on the hook for $1.175 million, with the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust paying the other $2 million in the settlement.

No criminal charges were filed in connection to the shooting.
