Men of Nehemiah zoning request pulled after neighborhood complaints

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – An Abilene non-profit has withdrawn a request to rezone a property on North 20th and Grape Street after neighbors voiced concerns.

Parking, traffic, and litter are just some of the concerns from neighbors living near the Men of Nehemiah facility in North Abilene.

The faith-based treatment center, located at the corner of Grape and Beech streets, was seeking a zoning change to build a parking lot at North 20th and Grape. But during the Abilene Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, several residents showed up to voice their frustrations.

One neighbor said cigarette butts are often left on the street in front of her house, explaining that since the facility is tobacco-free, clients smoke near her property instead. Another neighbor said some visitors park along the street despite on-site parking being available, causing traffic disruptions.

Others described men marching in large groups through the neighborhood, slowing traffic and disrupting the otherwise quiet area.

CEO Lee Morris spoke before the board, apologizing for the issues.

“First, I want to say I’m sorry. I didn’t know about these concerns, and I wish I would’ve,” Morris said.

He added that the proposed parking lot was solely meant to help ease the situation. The zoning discussion was tabled, but Morris later withdrew the request altogether, saying he wouldn’t move forward until the neighborhood is satisfied.
