BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A Baton Rouge man is accused of maiming, mutilating, and torturing a dog that did not belong to him.

Daniel Decuir, 26, was charged with cruelty to animals – aggravated.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office was called to a home on Rampart Court at 2:22 p.m. on June 13, 2023.

The responding deputy spoke with a woman as well as a witness. The latter said Decuir arrived at the home after an argument with his child’s mother, EBRSO said.

They said Decuir went to retrieve a phone charger from his room before returning to the living room.

Around 30 minutes later, the witness found the dog kennel open and his mom’s dog beside the sliding patio door. The dog was not responsive and the witness also observed a case of water that was pushed off a table, EBRSO said.

They said the witness last saw the dog in a locked kennel. The witness called Decuir who had left the home. When asked what happened to the dog, the Baton Rouge man said. “I was mad so I kicked it.”

The dog was later pronounced dead at a vet clinic. A necropsy showed that the dog died from multiple skull fractures.

Decuir was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Wednesday, Oct. 8.
