Troopers responded to the scene around 3:39 p.m. on Oct. 6, where investigators determined that a 2018 Ford Expedition was traveling north on U.S. 171 and attempted to turn left onto Barham Road. The driver entered the median crossover but failed to yield to a southbound 2004 Ford Windstar, leading to a collision between the two vehicles.
State Police said the driver of the Expedition, who was properly restrained, sustained minor injuries. A 6-year-old passenger, who was unrestrained, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a local hospital. A 4-year-old passenger, also unrestrained, suffered severe injuries and was hospitalized in critical condition.
The driver of the Windstar, who was properly restrained, was not injured.
On Oct. 7, authorities confirmed that the 4-year-old child succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. Routine toxicology samples were collected and submitted for analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.
In a statement, Louisiana State Police reminded drivers that while not every crash is survivable, proper use of seat belts and restraints significantly reduces the risk of serious injury or death. Officials urged motorists to take time to ensure that all passengers, especially children, are properly restrained before traveling.
