Thomas, 21, faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, obstruction of justice, aggravated criminal damage to property, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in connection with the 2024 death of Baton Rouge therapist Dr. Nick Abraham.
The judge appointed two doctors, one Ph.D. and one M.D., to conduct evaluations. The court will provide formal orders to those physicians.
Authorities said Abraham, 69, was found wrapped in a tarp along a highway in September 2024. The following day, investigators located Thomas driving Abraham’s vehicle in Baton Rouge. He was later arrested in Dallas, Texas, on Oct. 1, 2024, and extradited to Louisiana.
Thomas previously pleaded not guilty, and in an earlier hearing, a judge denied bond on the murder charge.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 28.
