NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — WGNO is your local election headquarters, and we are talking to the candidates in the major races in the Oct. 11 election.

We are taking a look at the race for Mayor of Slidell, and Good Morning New Orleans anchor LBJ spoke with Slidell Police Chief Randy Fandal about his campaign.

LBJ: Chief, your experience as a public servant, as well as your career in law enforcement, both the state police, Slidell Police Department are well documented. You bring a lot to the table. Talk to us about some of what you feel is important that you bring to the voters.

“Since I’ve been here, I’ve been leading the department of 130 plus people and managing a multimillion dollar budget. I think that’s what sets me apart going into this mayor’s race. I have that supervision. I have that leadership capability that I can bring to the mayor’s office. I want to keep moving Slidell forward. I brought that Slidell Police Department into where it is today. It’s one of the most respected and professional agencies in this country and I want to do the same thing for the City of Slidell,” said Fandal.

LBJ: The North Shore Square Mall deal has been in the news and regardless of where voters sit on it, the fact is it shines a light on revenue, bringing business into the city. How do you intend to help that particular effort?

“It’s got a good start. I have been far bringing development to that mall for years, and they did get a good start. All I asked was for it to be a transparent process. That has been stopped, unfortunately, because they didn’t slow down. Now we have a 1% sales tax out there until January. I hate to see that,” said Fandal.

LBJ: What’s the most pressing issue in the city of Slidell, you think that needs to be handled in your first 90 days?

“First 90 days, I want to get all of our departmental leaders to come in and look at our finances. I know there’s areas we can cut, and I want to start cutting them. Number one, we got to keep public safety strong with our public safety, we’re not going to get any help with economic development. We got to have a strong, safe city to bring businesses in there,” said Fandal.
