BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Louisiana leaders are stepping up efforts to make schools safer through collaboration and planning. The state’s K-12 School Safety Task Force met Tuesday to discuss how to turn ideas into real solutions for campuses statewide.
The meeting brought together teachers, architects, and legislators to explore ways to strengthen security and create safer learning environments for students and staff. But as many leaders pointed out, safety often comes with a price tag.
“We’re giving our students and faculty a chance to survive these horrible situations,” said John Hall, Superintendent of Jefferson Davis Parish Schools. “It’s a funding issue, it’s a timing issue with bonds, but it’s also, every parish is dealing with different student population decreases or sales tax decreases.”
From installing single-entry points to adding secure door locks and frosted windows, officials say upgrades like these can prevent potential threats. However, older school buildings pose structural challenges that make some of these projects harder to complete.
Paul Toups, School Safety Training Coordinator for Louisiana State Police, emphasized that true safety often requires tradeoffs.
“Safety and security is an inconvenience for all,” Toups said. “We’re just trying to make it more inconvenient for the bad guy to get onto that school campus. If that player is outside and can’t get in, then kids can’t get hurt.”
Despite the funding hurdles, state leaders remain committed to finding solutions. Senator Roger Edmonds said collaboration among parishes and continued legislative support will be critical moving forward.
“This is a priority,” Edmonds said. “One of the things that we have to do is set that dynamic so that we get this back to the legislature, because one issue that will continue to come up is funding.”
Lawmakers and educators plan to compile a statewide report outlining recommendations for improving school safety. Their mission is to ensure every Louisiana campus is better protected, better prepared, and better equipped for the future.
