Tuesday forecast: Rain clears as cold front moves through, leaving fall-like temps behind for Chicagoland
After a lengthy stretch of summer-like weather, it’s going to feel like fall again by Tuesday afternoon around Chicagoland.
Morning rain showers, which have been especially heavy in areas to the far south, will linger as a cold front moves through. The rain will be light by late Tuesday morning, with clouds clearing and sunshine reappearing in most areas by the afternoon.
Winds will also shift to a northerly direction after the cold front moves through, with gusts up to 15 to 20 miles per hour. After a high temperature of 83 in Chicago on Monday, highs will be only in the mid-60s on Tuesday, as pleasant but cooler fall-like conditions settle in.
A bit of a reality check is ahead, with temperatures returning to more typical levels for this time of year. Mid-afternoon temps Tuesday could be as much as 20 to 25 degrees cooler than the same time on Monday afternoon.
Following Tuesday morning showers, rainfall will be non-existent through early next week.
No repeat of the 80s is in the forecast anytime soon. Instead, cooler, more seasonable weather is on tap this week, with some warming likely by the weekend.
The forecast ensemble mean shows cooler, near seasonable air from mid- to late this week across the Midwest, Great Lakes and Northeast behind a cold frontal passage. But warmth builds again in the Central U.S. by this weekend, while cooler air takes hold out West into week two.
