This Topeka family goes all out on Halloween

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Reedy family in Topeka transformed their home into a Halloween light show.

The Reedy family has been putting on holiday-themed light shows at their house for the last eight years. Starting with simple plug-in Christmas tree lights, the family now has new techniques, technology and ideas to create something for Halloween and Christmas.

“Our first year looked nothing like it does now—we started with basic plug-in Christmas tree lights, so you can imagine the number of extension cords running across the yard,” said Dakota Reedy. “Once we upgraded to RGB lights—where each bulb can change to any color—we realized we could create amazing Halloween displays using purples, oranges, and greens. There are just as many fun Halloween songs as there are Christmas ones! Plus, since setup takes so much work, we figured why not get extra use out of it and enjoy the lights longer each year?”

The Reedy family started setting up the light show in early September. Every element must be hand-built and programmed, from each light bulb to every line of code to sync the music.

“Living on a busy corner means it’s rarely quiet anyway, but our neighbors love it—they’ve even joked about expanding the show into their yard,” Reedy said. “The business across the street closes after 5 p.m., which actually provides perfect parking for people who come to watch. We play music through outdoor speakers at a moderate level for those walking through the tunnel, but visitors can also tune their car radios to 89.1 FM to enjoy the show from inside their vehicles. Inside our house, blackout curtains help keep things calm so we can relax while the lights run. We also have cameras, and one of our favorite parts is watching kids dance through the tunnel or sing along on the sidewalk.”

This year, the “Reedy, Set, Glow” house uses 73 master props and 5,612 light clubs. The show runs all October, and you can catch the show from 7 p.m. – 10 p.m. Sunday–Thursday and Friday–Saturday until midnight. The Reedy, Set, Glow house is located at 2838 SE Minnesota Ave., Topeka.
