One deputy killed, another injured in shooting at Iberville Parish courthouse
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — An Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Deputy has died after a shooting Monday night at the parish courthouse.
Iberville Parish President Chris Daigle confirmed that Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office Deputy Charles Riley was killed in the line of duty and that Deputy Brett Stassi Jr. is still in critical condition.

The suspect involved in the shooting was killed. Louisiana State Police identified the suspect as Latrell Mikal Ornee Clark, 27.
Sheriff Stassi released this statement on Tuesday morning.
“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the tremendous outpouring of support, sympathy, and prayers following the devastating events that occurred last night. My deputies, my family, and I deeply appreciate the kindness and strength shown by our community and fellow law enforcement partners during this difficult time.
We lost a hero last night. Deputy Charles Riley, who served with the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office for 6 years in the Uniform Patrol Division, gave his life protecting the community. His dedication to duty and commitment to serving others will never be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and fellow deputies as we honor his sacrifice.
My son, Captain Brett Michael Stassi, Jr., a 20-year veteran of the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office serving in the Criminal Investigation Division, remains in intensive care this morning. He continues to fight for his life, and we ask everyone to keep him and our entire family in your prayers.
Our deputies are deeply hurting as we grieve the loss of one of our own and pray for another’s recovery. Please continue to keep the men and women of the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office in your thoughts as they navigate this tragedy together.
The Louisiana State Police is leading the investigation into this incident. Out of respect for their ongoing work, we will refrain from releasing additional details at this time. All inquiries regarding the investigation should be directed to Louisiana State Police.

Iberville Parish President Chris Daigle also released a statement on Tuesday morning.
Iberville Parish is grieving following the tragic shooting involving two deputies from the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office last night. One deputy lost his life, and Deputy Brett Stassi Jr. was critically injured in the line of duty.
Our deepest condolences are with the family of the deputy we lost, and we are especially lifting Sheriff Stassi, his son, and their family in our prayers as they face this unimaginable time.
Our deputies put their lives on the line every day to protect and serve the people of Iberville Parish, and this tragedy is a painful reminder of the risks they face in doing so.
The Louisiana State Police have taken over this investigation, as they do in all cases involving law enforcement, and we have full confidence that they will conduct a thorough and professional review of the events that unfolded.
On behalf of Iberville Parish, I extend my deepest condolences to the family of our fallen deputy, and I ask our community to keep both families, along with all of our deputies, in your thoughts and prayers. More officials react
“Please pray for the deputy we lost and their family, and continue praying for Sheriff Stassi’s son. Every loss of an officer hits hard. Pray hard,” said Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry also issued a statement Monday night, asking for prayers.
“Absolutely horrific news out of Iberville Parish tonight. Please join Sharon and me in praying for the deputy killed, for Deputy Stassi, who is in stable condition, their families, and the entire Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office. The violence must end.”

It’s unclear what led to the shooting and the suspect who was involved.
The Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office posted this message of condolences on its Facebook page Monday evening.

St. John Primary and St. Theresa Middle School posted a message on their Facebook page about Deputy Riley.
