NC coastal homes at risk of falling could face new threat from upcoming storm

NORTH CAROLINA (WNCN) – Coastal communities are bracing for yet another round of impacts this weekend as a coastal low develops off the Carolina coast.

The system is expected to take on Nor’easter-like characteristics — hugging the North Carolina shoreline and bringing gusty winds, rough surf, and beach erosion.

The timing would be on Saturday and Sunday, possibly lingering into Monday. Onshore winds and rain will batter the coast with rough surf.

The added erosion could worsen the damage already seen along parts of the Outer Banks, where at least nine oceanfront homes collapsed into the Atlantic in the past week. 

Since 2020, a total of 21 homes have collapsed into the ocean along North Carolina’s coastline — a stark reminder of the growing toll of coastal erosion.

Meanwhile, U.S. Congressman Greg Murphy (R-NC) is working to find long-term solutions. He’s proposing the Preventing Environmental Hazards Act, which would allow homeowners to receive up to 40% of their flood insurance payout in advance — money that could be used to demolish or relocate at-risk structures.
