Borchert touts his vision and experience in Slidell mayor’s race
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — WGNO is your local election headquarters, and we are talking to the candidates in the major races in the Oct. 11 election.

We are taking a look at the race for Mayor of Slidell, and Good Morning New Orleans anchor LBJ speaks with current Interim Mayor Bill Borchert about her campaign.

LBJ: Mayor, your time on the council, your time as a businessman, well documented. Beyond that experience, what makes Bill Borchert the guy? What makes you the the candidate to lead the city of Slidell at this time?

Borchert says, “You know, I think you hit it on the head. Number one, vision, number two, experience and number three, results. As a person who’s been on the council for over 17 years and now is the mayor for the past eight months, I’ve proven that I have the vision and the experience and the results to get things done.”

LBJ: Regardless of whether voters supported the whole North Shore Square Mall thing. We’ve seen a lot of that in the media the last couple of days. The fact is, it shines a light on the need for business and revenue to the city, just like most cities.

According to Borchert, “Slidell is retail saturated. We we have relied on retail sales tax for the last 40 or 50 years. And it has done Slidell well. If you look back from the from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, even the early 2000, Slidell was economic engine for St. Tammany Parish and and we have grown that economy and we’ve done that. But but in the following Katrina, things started to slow down and we relied a little too much on retail.”

LBJ: Just about every poll we’ve seen from any, metropolitan area for this election, residents want the stuff everyone wants. We want the streets right, we want, infrastructure, we want drainage and we want public safety. How will your administration do this differently than it has been done in the past?

“Well, I mentioned earlier that that my my background, my training is in engineering and I’m a problem solution type person. And if you look back over the years, you’ll see that that because of that, because of that training, I’ve actually done a lot of things over the years. And so having the experience to know where to go, there’s always buckets of money. You just have to have the keywords to know what to say to get those buckets released. And I’ve learned that over the last 17 years is the words that work and the words that don’t work,” said Borchert.
