Cherry Fire burning near Springville now at 650 acres, evacuations in place

HOBBLE CREEK CANYON, Utah (ABC4) — The Cherry Fire that started in Hobble Creek Canyon, east of Springville is currently estimated at 651 acres and is 0% contained.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, crews are focusing suppression efforts on the west flank of the fire to protect the community in the Left Hand Fork of Hobble Creek.

According to a latest update posted by Utah Fire Info, fire managers feel confident they’ll soon have some containment along the southern edge near South Fork Hobble Road.

The fire remained active into the night. Crews expect active fire activity on Friday. According to ABC4’s 4Warn Weather team, our first classic Fall storm has arrived welcoming cool, wet conditions to Northern and Central Utah to wrap the work week.

According to Mapleton City Fire Department, the wildfire started on Thursday afternoon as a vegetation fire in the Right Fork of Hobble Creek. Crews with Utah County Fire, Utah Forestry Fire & State Lands, the U.S. Forest Service, and multiple aircraft resources are responding to the fire.

The Northern Utah Type 3 Incident Management Team will take command of the fire today.

As of Thursday night, Right Fork Hobble Creek was evacuated from Jolley’s Ranch to Springville Crossing, as per Utah County Emergency Management. The evacuation is in place until Oct. 5, unless extended due to the fire behavior.

Everyone near the fire is under a ‘Ready’ status, which means they need to prepare incase of an evacuation.

The cause of the Cherry Fire is under investigation.

Resources assigned include hotshot crews, engines, helicopters, and fixed-wing aircraft conducting water and retardant drops.

The public has been asked to avoid the Right Hand Fork of Hobble Creek Canyon to allow firefighting personnel and equipment safe access.
