Pedestrian seriously injured after I-84 W crash backs up 'hundreds of vehicles'
Portland police said officers responded just before 9 p.m. on reports of a crash on I-84 near Northeast 148th Avenue. I-84 W is now closed between Northeast 181st Avenue in Gresham and Northeast 148th Avenue in Portland as the investigation continues.
The pedestrian who was hit was a traffic control worker, police said. The involved driver then crashed into a barrier and stopped.
After being taken to the hospital with serious injuries, the pedestrian’s medical status is unknown. However, the injuries are believed to be “life-threatening,” police said.
“The driver involved was not transported, remained on the scene, and is cooperating with police,” the Portland Police Bureau said in a press release. “The crash caused traffic to stop, and hundreds of vehicles were caught in the backup.”
Both PPB and the Gresham Police Department have closed all access ramps west of Northeast 181st Avenue in Multnomah County.
The PPB Traffic Division Major Crash Team is continuing to investigate at the scene.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Portland police.
