How to make FOX59 a preferred source on Google
The search giant recently launched the “preferred sources” tool, which allows users to choose which news outlets they see in the “Top stories” section after a search.
Here is how it works and how you can make sure FOX59/CBS4 is your preferred news source.
When you search for a topic in the news, Google’s algorithms rank stories based on factors like relevance, prominence and the publisher’s authority. The “Top stories” section is one of the main places those articles appear.
With preferred sources, you can create a list of outlets you want to see more often in your results.
The feature, which launched in August, lets users add as many sources as they want, ensuring there’s still room for a balanced news diet.
If you want to see more Indiana-focused coverage from the state leaders in news reporting, you can set your preferred source on Google as FOX59.com.
To do this, simply make sure you’re signed into your Google account and then search for an Indiana news topic such as “Diego Morales travel expenses.”
Google will present a section titled “Top stories” on the subject. Note the icon next to the “Top stories” verbiage.
By clicking on that icon, Google will lead you to the new “preferred sources” setting.
Here, you can type in FOX59.com and click on our website to set Indiana’s news leader as one of your preferred sources.
Setting preferred sources doesn’t block out everything else — you’ll still see articles from other sites, and you can update your list whenever you like.
The only difference is that your preferred sources will start to show up more frequently.
Google said over half of users choose four or more sources, and value being able to select a range of options.
