Crossing guard at Fox Elementary inspires a community
Bringing more than 20 years of experience to the street corners near Fox Elementary, Hennie says parents can trust him with their young ones.
“You don’t have to worry about your child once your child gets to this corner, because your child becomes my child,” Hennie said. “We’re going to cross the street safely and you know nothing’s going to happen to your child.”
Attention has come to Hennie recently, as one parent in the community gave him a shout out that has gained nearly 200 likes.
Hennie credits much of his positive attitude to his faith.
“Before I start my shift, I pray for those kids and those teachers and ask that everyone is safe and has a great day.” he explained.
His infectious energy has seeped it’s way into the students at Fox Elementary and even the team that works directly with him. Hennie’s supervisor, MCSD School Police Officer Robert Greene explained what kind of joy he brings to those around him.
“He is an inspiration to the children and we hear all the time parents complimenting what an outstanding job he does.” Greene said.
While Hennie does enjoy his part-time work working as a crossing guard, he says his work cooking for the community, spreads love through people’s stomach. His business, Hennie’s Smoked BBQ, features a menu of beef and pork ribs, chicken, wings, greens, macaroni and cheese and more.
Richard Hennie’s impact on this community of students, parents and teachers will hopefully be felt for many years to come.
