Volunteers will meet at the Great Salt Lake Shorelands Nature Preserve near Layton from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday, October 3. They will be planting 850 plants native to Utah that have been chosen to improve the habitat for pollinators near the shores of the Great Salt Lake.

Snacks, drinks, and safety equipment will be provided, but volunteers should also bring work gloves, hand shovels, eye protection, water, sunscreen, and bug spray.

If you are interested in volunteering, you can register on Sageland Collaborative’s website here. You will also need to fill out their volunteer liability waiver. Volunteers under 18 need a guardian to fill out the waiver, and any volunteers under the age of 15 need to be accompanied by a guardian.

The Sageland Collaborative team will provide a planting demonstration and guide volunteers to plant seedlings at designated areas in the preserve. Volunteers will need to be able to walk up to one mile roundtrip on dirt paths, uneven surfaces, and through vegetation.

The plants have been provided through the Utah Pollinator Habitat Program from the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food.

According to the Sageland Collaborative, this is an opportunity to learn about pollinators and native plants, to connect with restoration practitioners, and to build skills relevant to natural resources careers.
