Tips for Preventing Fires
According to the American Red Cross, in order to prevent fires, you should ensure that you keep anything that could catch fire at least three feet away from anything that gets hot, like for example, space heaters or stoves. Turn off portable heaters or anything that gets hot when you leave the room or you go to sleep. Never leave a burning candle unattended, even for a minute.
Keep any heating sources in your home clean and in working order. The Red Cross says that many home fires are started by stoves or furnaces that are not maintained properly.
Fix or replace any frayed extension cords, exposed wires, or loose plugs. Do not run any wires under any rugs or through high-traffic areas, and do not attach them to walls or floors using nails. Make sure there is no exposed wiring in your electrical outlets and make sure they have cover plates. Do not overload outlets or extension cords.
When charging anything with a lithium-ion battery, use the charging cord that came with the device, and do not charge it on flammable furniture, such as under your pillow or on a couch. You also should not continue to charge the battery after it’s fully charged. ABC4 also has a list with more tips for lithium-ion battery safety here.
