(FOX40.COM) —  A Girl Scout Cadette from Sacramento, Natalie Rubio, 12, is championing legislation to address the dangers of extreme heat for children in California with “Natalie’s Law: Student Heat Illness Recognition and Response Education.”

The proposal requests that all public and charter schools in the state provide interactive lessons each year that teach students how to recognize the signs of heat illnesses and when to seek help from adults. Schools would also conduct refresher lessons during heatwaves and advisories, officials said.

“Kids can’t protect themselves from what they don’t know. Heat illness is preventable, and with this simple education, we can save lives,” Rubio said during the presentation of her vision at a Sacramento City Unified School District board meeting.

Her petition has gained the attention of health and education leaders, including Dr. Lisa Patel with Stanford Medicine.

Rubio is in the process of developing a petition video and a song for young students to help them remember heat illness symptoms.

Her petition is a part of her Girl Scout Silver Award project, the highest honor a Girl Scout Cadette can achieve.
