According to the N.C. State Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at 3:05 a.m. on N.C. 73 near South Pilot Knob Road in the Cowans Ford area. That’s where troopers say a 2014 Honda CR-V traveling east struck a bicyclist.
After the collision, the Honda allegedly continued east on N.C. 73 into Mecklenburg County. The victim’s bicycle was located near the Cowans Ford Dam Overlook.
The bicyclist, 23-year-old Jaycob Len Neece, of Huntersville, died from his injuries at the scene.
The driver of the Honda, Brian Marcus James, 30, of Charlotte, was not injured.
James was arrested in Huntersville and charged with felony hit and run and misdemeanor death by vehicle. He is being held on a $40,000 bond at the Lincoln County Detention Center. Investigating troopers seized the vehicle.
During the on-scene investigation, N.C. 73 was closed in the area for several hours.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the investigation.
