Summit County man charged after allegedly setting fire to trailer, shooting at unoccupied warehouse

SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — A man has been charged with several felonies after allegedly setting his trailer on fire and shooting the ceiling of a Park City warehouse in September.

William Dougherty, 39, was charged today with aggravated burglary (a first-degree felony), property damage/destruction more than $5000 (a second-degree felony), and property damage or destruction to defraud insurer more than $5000 (a second-degree felony).

He has also been charged with property damage or destruction valuing $500-$1499 (a class A misdemeanor), reckless burning with failure to control (a class A misdemeanor) and theft valuing less than $500 (a class B misdemeanor).

Allegedly, Dougherty set fire to his RV trailer and allowed it to burn, before vandalizing a warehouse belonging to his employer on September 6, 2025.

Case History

According to court documents, on September 6, a Park City resident looked outside her home and saw an RV on fire near 7400 N Whileaway Road East.

This resident told law enforcement that she knew the RV belonged to William Dougherty and that she had seen Dougherty getting into his truck and driving away from the fire. Fortunately, neighbors and firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze.

Later that same day, William Dougherty allegedly caused significant property damage inside a warehouse belonging to his employer, Park City Mountain Resort, at 1375 Munchkin Road. The warehouse was unoccupied at the time.

Another employee arrived at the warehouse after Dougherty had left and saw that the entryway was severely damaged and the entry door was open. That employee reviewed security footage which showed an individual, later identified as Dougherty, on the property.

In the footage, Dougherty can be seen shooting his way into the warehouse before discharging several more rounds that damaged the warehouse interior and ceiling. He also allegedly took a bottle of Bulleit bourbon from an office refrigerator before leaving.

The employee that reported the crime left a truck parked in front of the building that was struck by several bullets, and a bicycle in the warehouse was also damaged. The damage to the truck was totaled at $9,4001.84 and the damage to the bicycle was totaled at $1325.

The damage to the warehouse has been reported at more than $5,000.

Park City Police Department found William Dougherty at Deer Valley Resort and searched his vehicle. They found an AR-15 style rifle that was loaded with ammunition consistent with that found at the warehouse.

Previously, in 2023, Dougherty pled guilty to purchasing/possessing/using a firearm by a restricted person (a third-degree felony), assaulting a police officer or military service member (a class A misdemeanor), and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (class B misdemeanor)
