BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A Maurepas man accused of getting over $60,000 from a rental assistance program was arrested.

According to Attorney General Liz Murrill, Quinton Mitchell, 42, was a landlord who submitted fraudulent applications to the Office of Community Development to get emergency rental assistance.

The investigation stemmed from a state audit that revealed alleged fraud in the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP), a state-administered program. The ERAP gives emergency assistance to renters at risk of experiencing homelessness.

In Mitchell’s applications, he allegedly listed fake tenants, properties he didn’t own, and inflated rent amounts. Between May 2021 and March 2022, Mitchell received over $60,000 for properties in Ascension, Livingston, and St. John parishes.

He was arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of theft by fraud (over $25,000) and government benefit fraud. No bond information was available at this time.

This is an ongoing investigation.
