Wiley University soccer and volleyball weekend action

MARSHALL, Texas (KTAL/KMSS) — Wiley University soccer traveled while the volleyball team was in action at home over the weekend.

The Wiley women’s soccer team dominated Arlington Baptist with a 9-0 win at Oakridge School in Arlington.

Eight Lady Wildcats (5-3-0) scored to snap a three-match losing streak and post their highest scoring total of the season.

Alondra Limon scored her first two goals of the season while Paloma Espinoza and Nadia Hernandez each posted two assists and one goal.

Deyanara Hernandez notched her first assist of the season. She and Feryi Sanchez both notched their third goals of the season.

Wiley opened up the scoring with Deyanara’s goal in the ninth minute, followed by Carissa Escamilla in the 17th minute, and Carolyn Espinoza less than a minute later. Paloma’s goal also came in the first half, giving the Lady Wildcats a four-goal lead at halftime.

They started the second half strong with Limo scoring both of her goals in the first three minutes. Lizette Nararro scored in the 61st minute, assisted by Nadia, who added her goal in the 64th minute.

In her first career start, Leah Ramirez played over 55 minutes in goal and stopped the only shot she faced. Destiny Allison saved two shots in the last 34 minutes to seal the shutout. For their next match, the Lady Wildcats will travel across town to face East Texas Baptist University on October 1.

The Wiley men (3-3-1) also snapped a three-match losing streak by shutting out Arlington Baptist with a 4-0 victory, their first shutout since October 26, 2023.

Jayce Graves scored his first two goals of the season in the 50th and 71st minutes, following up on Anthony Ulloa’s goal in the 38th minute, which started the scoring bonanza. Habimana Janvier scored his first goal in the 74th minute with an assist from Alvaro Guerrero.

The Wildcats outshot Arlington Baptist 22-3, led by Graves, with seven shots and five on goal.

Daniel Rojas made his second start in goal and stopped three shots for his first shutout.

The Wildcats will rematch Arlington Baptist in their next game on October 3.

The Wiley volleyball team did not fare as well, dropping a home game to Paul Quinn College on September 26 and a road game to Huston-Tillotson University on September 27.

Against Paul Quinn, Rachelle Santos led the attack with 11 kills in 34 attempts, followed by Shyla Starks, who posted eight in 27 attempts.

Madison Herrera contributed 27 assists, five digs, and an ace, and Marai Guinyard led the team with 16 digs and the team’s other ace. Jae Jemmott led the block with two assists.

Ten hours after they finished playing, the Lady Wildcats traveled six hours to Huston-Tillotson in Austin.

Starks led the team with seven kills and two aces, while Leah Monsegue added 15 assists, three digs, and an ace. Santos contributed nine digs, and Kerrigan Biggs and Starks teamed for a block.

Lady Wildcat volleyball returns to action on October 2 with a trip to take on Philander Smith University.
