Man accused of killing elderly woman after hit-and-run turns himself in

PHILADELPHIA (WPHL) — Police announced the driver accused of a deadly hit-and-run in Overbrook has turned himself in.

Michael Harper, 47, turned himself in to police on Monday. Earlier that day, police recovered the vehicle involved on the 2700 block of Snyder Avenue.

According to the Philadelphia Police Department, on Friday, September 26, just after 5:15 p.m., a pedestrian accident happened at the intersection of 54th Street and Lancaster Avenue.

Investigators say the car was driving eastbound on Lancaster Avenue when it hit the victim, Dorthea Cathell, 77. After the crash, police said the car reversed down Lancaster Avenue and drove south, before dropping off a female passenger at a pizza shop near 56th Street and Girard Avenue.

Cathell was taken to Lankenau Medical Center, where she died from her injuries less than an hour later.

Harper is facing homicide by vehicle, DUI, and related charges.
