Kansas State Fire Marshals gather for refresher course in Topeka

TOPEKA (KSNT) – A group of first responders from across the state is gathered in Topeka for a refresher course on saving lives.

Kansas State Fire Marshal staff are training at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library this week. The agency’s mission is to protect Kansans and their property.

In addition to preventing and fighting fires, fire marshals train people to be prepared in all kinds of situations, so their own lifesaving skills must be up-to-date.

“We’re equipping our staff with a lot of the basic knowledge that they need, that they need to know so that they can better take care of the jobs that they’re out there, whether they’re inspectors or their investigators, whoever they are,” Richard Watson, Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal, said. “We have boiler inspectors, elevator staff, just know that we’re equipping them with the knowledge that it takes to better take care again the citizens of the state of Kansas.”

During this three-day program, participants review skills like CPR, Stop the Bleed, active shooter response and more.
